Different organizations use different tools to develop and implement an IT strategy. Not only companies but also the educational institutions have now given significant importance to the implementation of an IT strategy in the organizational and or institutional structure (Morrison, 1998). In order to improve efficiency, companies as well as educational institutions require continuously updating their technical expertise in order to be competitive in the market. (Foster Hollowell, 1999). One of the most important factors that should be considered in using IT are the tools in the specified or targeted strategy, which should be carefully designed so to come out with desired results.This research paper is focused on one academic enterprise known as Angelo State University (ASU) and its recently a dopted Competitive Information Technology Strategies. The paper also focuses on the degree to which this university relies on its implemented IT strategies. In addition it describes the benefits and techniques by which information technology could be brought in use by ASU. There is an in-depth analysis conducted of various strategies that would or could be utilized by various types of enterprises. All of this analysis would be affected by the amount of resources an enterprise could bring to the table.IT Strategy- Higher EducationIT BenefitsInformation technology is a broad concept. It can be defined in a way that technical expertise can be involved in the management of information (Nana, 2009). In the competitive environment informational efficiency has profound impact on the profitability of the business. Therefore, information technology has significant importance at the entrepreneurial level (Pieterson, 2009). There are different benefits of information technology at the entrepreneurial level; some of them are as follows * Information technology helps in creating a globalized business by incorporating an efficient enterprise resource planning system. * The real time dissemination of relevant information within organization improves the efficiency of the business. * The business communication system becomes cheaper, quick and efficient. Different departments of the organization as well as educational institutions are linked with the centralized system of business process (Katz, 1999). The level of security within the system depends upon the organization. If the company has established strong checks within the organization then only relevant information can be accessed to the relevant personnel, but if no firewalls exits then all employees can easily access all the information regarding the business process. * Cost efficiency is on e of the most important and significant factors that can be achieved with the implementation of a strong IT strategy within the organization. The cost efficiency can be achieved if directional strategy is implemented with the predefined objectives of the organization. * The working hours can be increased and the business can provide 24/7 services through online activities without the requirement of a physical presence of key business personnel. * The risk of loss can be mitigated with the help of implementing a highly efficient IT strategy. Now the IT needs to implement strong ERP (enterprise resource planning) that can provide centralized business processes and access can be given to all the relevant personnel to quickly respond to information. People processes and technology are the mainstream tools that IT oriented enterprises continue to follow. Looking at the case of Angelo State University, they incorporate the people, processes and technology in such a combination that ensures maximum benefit for their organization. These benefits include strea mlining the processes and the top most process that IT can deliver to an organization such as the ASU is to provide information in a timely manner. An important question to ask is, why it is so important for an academic enterprise to incorporate IT strategies. The logic is obvious, an academic enterprise is also a business and like any other business, it needs to hire the right people and retain more students and an IT strategy make it possible for them.Changing Employee MindsetMost of the old employees, which are involved in typical assignments throughout their professional life, feel hard to learn new technology, so the implementation of the IT strategy becomes a complicated task. New technology implementation requires a new work environment and new way of doing business. Therefore, if the new technology is implemented without changing the mindset of the old employees, which are considered key employees because of their high level of experience, can make the IT strategy ineffectiv e.Cost-Benefit Analysis DifficultyAnother important consideration while implementing an IT strategy is the difficulty in conducting the cost benefit analysis for the business regarding the IT strategy. The main reason for this part to be difficult during implementation of the strategy is the consideration of opportunity cost, which would be created by implementing the IT strategy. For example, the implementation of an IT strategy for any kind of business requires significant cash flow. If the same cash flow is kept in the bank or invested somewhere else it would also generate some profit. The value or rate of that profit must also be incorporated in the cost-benefit analysis of the business and use the net gain or loss to value the strategy.Difficulty Conducting TrainingsAs mentioned above the old employees may not want the organization to bring about the implementation of an IT strategy. One major reason is that they are required to be trained for the new business or IT strategy. Training all the departments or relevant departments is a long and cumbersome task. For example, incorporating the IT strategy in automating the production process for the manufacturing concern business requires an in-depth analysis and understanding of the whole production process. In addition to this, the value chain model should be carefully studied and understood by the IT experts.Various IT strategiesThere could be various techniques which could be utilized by the enterprise in order to implement a successful strategy (Hong, 2009). Information technology assisted techniques have various forms; it could be used for planning, mapping, and developing of strategic analysis of different extents such as PESTEL, SWOT analysis, simulation, and multiple regression analysis. Throughout the existence of man, individuals spend majority of their life trying to find themselves. This journey is the journey in which they hope they will be able to discover who they truly are and in turn find their identity. One cannot say that they created their own identity because an identity is not simply how we define ourselves but also how others view us. Identity is defined as distinguishing characteristics of an individual, this being said we do not distinguish ourselves from others that is the jobs of outside entities at times. If we really simply on our own definition of self we create an illusion of the individual we want to be but not whom we truly encompass. This is where recognition plays a role. Recognition of oneself by others helps solidify the identity that we have built in our own mind for ourselves. We discover who we are through interactions and how we respond to different stimuli, what are likes are, what are dislikes are, whom we identify ourselves as bein g similar to. This is exemplified marvelously in Homer’s epic The Odyssey; Homer effectively uses Telemachus the son of the central character to Odysseus as a means to show the journey in which one embarks on to discover who they truly are. The mayor of casterbridge Essay Thesis Many believe that a humans personality determines their place in life. In the Mayor of Casterbridge, Thomas Hardy explores the role of character in determining fate. He uses a characters personality flaws to determine their fate. Hardy utilizes such traits as temper, naivety, control problems, and shyness. Hardy takes his character and places them in a situation where their personalities usually make the situation worse. Throughout the novel the character, Lucetta, is portrayed as a spoiled child. She likes things to be the best for herself. She comes to Casterbridge in order to finish what she and Henchard proposed to do earlier, that is, marry one another. When she refuses to see him, because she likes Farfrae, she is intentionally provoking him. Henchard confronts her about this matter and he marriage to him. Lucetta refuses to marry until Henchard threatens to black mail her. He intends to black mail her with the love letters she wrote him earlier. She agrees to the marriage. Lucetta, however, marries Farfrae. She does this because he is good looking, better off than Henchard, and totally infatuated with her. This course was the best for her at the moment. She knew of Henchards past, she had experienced his temper, and was afraid he would ruin her. Lucetta also puts a great deal of emphasis on looks. Earlier in the story, she had fallen in love with Henchard. After he left Jersey, Lucetta wrote Henchard love letters. These letters would become her down fall. She died of shock (or possibly miscarriage) after the skimmity ride. The only reason the townsfolk knew about her past with Henchard were these love letters. She had trustingly asked Henchard to deliver them back to her keeping so that she could destroy them. If she had trusted him enough to return the letters, why couldnt she trust him to destroy them? Henchards fate was strongly rooted in his character. He has several character flaws that contributed to the break down of every relationship he had. At the beginning of the novel it is his temper that starts the whole story off. At the fair in Weydon Priors, he becomes angry with his wife while he is drunk. Henchard tries to sell her because he believes that it is Susans and the childs fault that he is not successful. This is evidently not the first time. He finds an interest ed man who pays five pounds and five shillings for her. This of course is the beginning of the break down of his family life and his role as a father. Henchard is upset when he sobers up the next morning. There are other instance where Henchards temper destroys his relationships. The next episode in the story is when Farfraes idea for the fair works better than his own. In a fit of jealous rage, Henchard fires his good friend. This alienates Farfrae from both Henchard and Elizabeth-Jane. It also distances Henchard from Elizabeth-Jane and Farfrae. His temper has now caused a fault in his business and his family. Farfrae sets up a business in competition with him. Henchard also denies Farfrae the right to court his daughter. This of course pushes Elizabeth-Jane farther from her father. In Henchards anger and other habits there is an element of control. That is lack of control. Henchard, it seems, likes his drink. In the beginning of the story he asks for some liquor to be added to his furmity. Once drunk, he losses control and becomes angry. This of course leads to the family break up. In the morning, he swears,While he is sober for those years, he is very prosperous. Henchard becomes a wealthy corn merchant as well as the Mayor of Casterbridge. However, when the twenty-one years are over he starts drinking again. Prior to this because of his temper and the such, he is a ruined man. When he takes up drinking again it just hastens the downward spiral he is on. The Battle of Rhode Island in the American Revolution The Battle of Rhode Island was fought August 29, 1778, during the American Revolution (1775-1783) and was an early attempt at a combined operation between American and French forces. In the summer of 1778, a French fleet led by Admiral Comte dEstaing arrived on the American coast. It was decided this force would join with Major General John Sullivans command to recapture Newport, RI. Due to intervention by the Royal Navy and damage sustained by a storm at sea, dEstaing withdrew from the operation leaving Sullivan to confront the British alone. Unable to execute the operation without French support, he withdrew up Aquidneck Island with Newports garrison in pursuit. Assuming a strong position, Sullivan fought a successful defensive battle on August 29 before his men departed the island. Background With the signing of the Treaty of Alliance in February 1778, France formally entered the American Revolution on behalf of the United States. Two months later, Vice Admiral Charles Hector, comte dEstaing departed France with twelve ships of the line and around 4,000 men. Crossing the Atlantic, he intended to blockade the British fleet in Delaware Bay. Public Domain Arriving in early July, dEstaing found that the British had abandoned Philadelphia and withdrawn to New York. Moving up the coast, the French ships assumed a position outside New York harbor and the French admiral contacted General George Washington who had established his headquarters at White Plains. As dEstaing felt that his ships would be unable to cross the bar into to the harbor, the two commanders decided on joint strike against the British garrison at Newport, RI. Since that time, a standoff had ensued with British forces occupying the city and Aquidneck Island while the Americans held the mainland. In March 1778, Congress appointed Major General John Sullivan to oversee the Continental Armys efforts in the area. Assessing the situation, Sullivan began stockpiling supplies with the goal of attacking the British that summer. These preparations were damaged in late May when Pigot conducted successful raids against Bristol and Warren. In mid-July, Sullivan received word from Washington to begin raising additional troops for a move against Newport. On the 24th, one of Washingtons aides, Colonel John Laurens, arrived and informed Sullivan of dEstaings approach and that the city was to be the target of a combined operation. To assist in the attack, Sullivans command was soon augmented by brigades led by Brigadier Generals John Glover and James Varnum which had moved north under the guidance of the Marquis de Lafayette. Swiftly taking action, the call went out to New England for the militia. Heartened by news of the French assistance, militia units from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire began arriving at Sullivans camp swelling the American ranks to around 10,000. Major General Nathanael Greene. Photograph Source: Public Domain As preparations moved forward, Washington dispatched Major General Nathanael Greene, a native of Rhode Island, north to aid Sullivan. To the south, Pigot worked to improve Newports defenses and was reinforced in mid-July. Sent north from New York by General Sir Henry Clinton and Vice Admiral Lord Richard Howe, these additional troops increased to the garrison to around 6,700 men. The Franco-American Plan Arriving off Point Judith on July 29, dEstaing met with the American commanders and the two sides began developing their plans for assaulting Newport. These called for Sullivans army to cross from Tiverton to Aquidneck Island and advance south against British positions on Butts Hill. As this occurred, the French troops would disembark on Conanicut Island before crossing over to Aquidneck and cutting off the British forces facing Sullivan. This done, the combined army would move against Newports defenses. Anticipating an allied attack, Pigot began withdrawing his forces back to the city and abandoned Butts Hill. On August 8, dEstaing pushed his fleet into Newport harbor and began landing his force on Conanicut the next day. As the French were landing, Sullivan, seeing that Butts Hill was vacant, crossed over and occupied the high ground. The French Depart As French troops were going ashore, a force of eight ships of the line, led by Howe, appeared off Point Judith. Possessing a numerical advantage, and concerned that Howe could be reinforced, dEstaing re-embarked his troops on August 10 and sailed out to battle the British. As the two fleets jockeyed for position, the weather quickly deteriorated scattering the warships and badly damaging several. While the French fleet regrouped off Delaware, Sullivan advanced on Newport and began siege operations on August 15. Five days later, dEstaing returned and informed Sullivan that the fleet would be immediately departing for Boston to make repairs. Incensed, Sullivan, Greene, and Lafayette pleaded with the French admiral to remain, even for just two days to support an immediate attack. Photograph Source: Public Domain The French actions provoked a flurry of irate and impolitic correspondence from Sullivan to other senior American leaders. In the ranks, dEstaings departure sparked outrage and led many of the militia to return home. As a result, Sullivans ranks rapidly began to deplete. On August 24, he received word from Washington that the British were preparing a relief force for Newport. The threat of additional British troops arriving eliminated the possibility of conducting a protracted siege. As many of his officers felt a direct assault against Newports defenses was unfeasible, Sullivan elected to order a withdraw north with the hope that it could be conducted in a way that would draw Pigot out from his works. On August 28, the last American troops departed the siege lines and retreated to a new defensive position at the northern end of the island. The Armies Meet Anchoring his line on Butts Hill, Sullivans position looked south across a small valley to Turkey and Quaker Hills. These were occupied by advance units and overlooked the East and West Roads which ran south to Newport. Alerted to the American withdrawal, Pigot ordered two columns, led by General Friedrich Wilhelm von Lossberg and Major General Francis Smith, to push north to harry the enemy. While the formers Hessians moved up the West Road towards Turkey Hill, the latters infantry marched up the East Road in the direction of Quaker Hill. On August 29, Smiths forces came under fire from Lieutenant Colonel Henry B. Livingstons command near Quaker Hill. Mounting a stiff defense, the Americans forced Smith to request reinforcements. His efforts were aided by Hessian forces which flanked the enemy position. Falling back to the main American lines, Livingston and Wigglesworths men passed through Glovers brigade. Probing forward, British troops came under artillery fire from Glovers position. After their initial attacks were turned back, Smith elected to hold his position rather than mount a full assault. To the west, von Lossbergs column engaged Laurens men in front of Turkey Hill. Slowly pushing them back, the Hessians began to gain the heights. Though reinforced, Laurens was ultimately forced to fall back across the valley and passed through Greenes lines on the American right. Colonel John Laurens. Public Domain As the morning progressed, the Hessian efforts were aided by three British frigates that moved up the bay and began firing on the American lines. Shifting artillery, Greene, with assistance from American batteries on Bristol Neck, was able to force them to withdraw. Around 2:00 PM, von Lossberg began an assault on Greenes position but was thrown back. Mounting a series of counterattacks, Greene was able to regain some ground and compelled the Hessians to fall back to the top of Turkey Hill. Though fighting began to subside, an artillery duel continued into the evening. Aftermath The fighting cost Sullivan 30 killed, 138 wounded, and 44 missing, while Pigots forces sustained 38 killed, 210 wounded, and 12 missing. On the night of August 30/31, American forces departed Aquidneck Island and moved to new positions at Tiverton and Bristol. Arriving at Boston, dEstaing was met with a cool reception by the citys residents as they had learned of the French departure through Sullivans irate letters. The situation was improved somewhat by Lafayette who had been sent north by the American commander in the hopes of securing the fleets return. Though many in the leadership were angered by the French actions at Newport, Washington and Congress worked to calm passions with the goal of preserving the new alliance.
